A new survey (PDF) released by the Civil Society Institute shows that 77 percent of the American public are now more supportive of cleaner, renewable energy sources such as wind and solar than they were a year ago.
In addition to being supportive, 77 percent would also like to see more federal loan guarantees for alternative energy sources other than nuclear power. Support for additional nuclear power plants in the United States has been dropping, with nearly 60 percent of respondents to this survey stating that they are less supportive after the Fukushima disaster in Japan last year. 65 percent said they would oppose a nuclear plant built within 50 miles of their home. Those numbers are up from last year, when 50 percent were against the building of new nuclear plants and 62 percent were against building them in their community.
The results of this survey of 1,032 adults confirms what most researchers already know – people around the globe are ready for more investments and installations of renewable energy projects.
Previous studies have shown that 80 percent of Massachusetts residents support the Cape Wind Project, 72 percent of adults in Scotland are in favor of more wind power, and nearly 90% of the U.S. public support more use of solar energy. Those are overwhelmingly positive numbers in favor of using renewable energy. And while the way some members of Congress defend subsidies given to oil and coal companies one could be made to believe that the American people love burning oil, but these surveys show otherwise. We’re ready for more clean energy.
The Civil Society Institute is a nonprofit thinktank and a parent organization of the Hybrid Owners of America. It works to bring together public, private, and government organizations for discussions on energy-related issues.
