First North Carolina makes it a law that sea levels cannot rise due to climate change, and now Alabama wants to outlaw sustainable development. And no, that’s not a typo nor is this referencing an article from The Onion.

Lawmakers in Alabama actually want to ban any policies tied to “Agenda 21,” the environmental action plan adopted by the United Nations in 1992 to, you know, try to save the planet from environmental destruction, and they have gone so far as to pass a law saying as much:

The State of Alabama and all political subdivisions may not adopt or implement policy recommendations that deliberately or inadvertently infringe or restrict private property rights without due process, as may be required by policy recommendations originating in, or traceable to “Agenda 21,” adopted by the United Nations in 1992 at its Conference on Environment and Development or any other international law or ancillary plan of action that contravenes the Constitution of the United States or the Constitution of the State of Alabama.

Somehow, the entire body of the United Nations banded together in 1992 in order to take away the personal property rights of Alabamians under the guise of stopping climate change. And as we all know, that’s exactly what the UN has time to work on up there in their big, comfy offices.

Just when you thought things were improving on the sustainability front, along comes some residents of Alabama to remind us that we all have a lot of work ahead of us if we are to save this space rock which we call home. If you are living in Alabama, please note that your lawmakers are making decisions for your state that will have worldwide implications. We need to move forward on climate issues, not backwards.
