By the end of the year, Ford will have eight vehicles rated 40 mpg or better — twice as many as the company offered last year, and more than any other full-line car manufacturer this year. The lineup includes the Focus SFE, Fusion Hybrid, Fiesta, and five others. Several other models don’t reach the 40 mpg standard, but offer the best fuel efficiency for their class.
Ford is also set to introduce new electric and hybrid cars, including the C-MAX hybrid, a compact car that Ford says will get better gas mileage than the Toyota Prius. By 2013, Ford will offer a total of six electric cars. It will also produce more EcoBoost engines, which provide the power of larger engines while using about 20 percent less energy.

Another innovation in progress at Ford is development of the Nokia Location Platform, a cloud-based service that can help improve efficiency by learning driver behavior. Part of a concept car for now, the technology could someday do everything from suggesting the best route to work, to automatically adjusting the hybrid’s powertrain controls, to locating available EV parking spots.
Ford is also making progress in energy efficiency in manufacturing. From 2010 to 2011, the amount of energy used to make a vehicle dropped 10 percent, and the company plans to reduce that another 25 percent by 2016.
