Looks like Alec Baldwin has some serious eco-interests in real life when not busy playing a pompous television executive on his hit TV show, “30 Rock”.
The actor has applied to have a wind turbine installed on his 8-acre Amagansett property in East Hampton Town and if it is approved, he would be the first private resident to get permission to have one. Several wind turbines are already present out on the island, installed locally at Mahoney Farm and Nursery and Iacono Farms, as well as the Amagansett Fire Station.
However, local town supervisors aren’t too keen on the idea, especially Supervisor Bill Wilkinson. “What if you live in a community with 400 houses, and 400 houses want a wind turbine?,” he asked, implying that if Baldwin gets permission then soon everyone may want their own turbine – and what good could possibly come from that?
Right off the top of my head I can think of a few good things that could come from a town full of residents with the money and interest in putting up wind turbines, but I digress.
The turbine the actor wants to put up is a 10-kW unit, and the same model already in place at the two farms mentioned above. Standing 131 feet tall, the single turbine on his property could provide for 110 percent of his energy needs – leaving a surplus that could be sold back to the local power grid, slightly reducing the need for energy generated from polluting sources.
Kudos to Mr. Baldwin for wanting to take his property off-grid and for giving the wind energy industry some much-needed exposure. Now, if we could just figure out a way to harness the energy you expend doing all those Capital One ads, we may be able to solve the energy crisis once and for all.
