Did you know that in addition to working out of a LEED Platinum building and helping develop wind farms, Clif Bar & Co. rewards employees for commuting to work in eco-friendly ways, such as biking, carpooling or driving a hybrid vehicle?

The green-committed company rewards employees who agree to commute by bicycle at least twice a month, providing them with up to $500 toward the purchase of a commuter bike or for certain modifications to an existing bike. In addition, bicyclists join walkers, public transit riders and carpoolers in a benefit program where employees can earn up to $960 a year. They earn points quarterly, which can be redeemed for cash, massages, commuter checks, company gear, and climate offsets.

However, driving may be the best option for some employees. For them, Clif Bar & Co. offers a $6,500 cash incentive that can be used toward purchase of a biodiesel-fueled, natural gas-fueled or high mileage hybrid vehicle. Biodiesel vehicles must run on B100 for at least half the year. Eligible hybrids include the popular Toyota Prius, Honda Civic Hybrid, Honda Civic GX.

Finally, the company offers an incentive for employees to make carbon-reducing improvements to their homes. They can receive up to $1,000 per year for replacing appliances with more efficient models, solar installations and more.

Not all companies can afford such grand incentive programs, but many could apply the same values to their businesses.
